Obtain a License Plate in Texas

Eligibility for Texas License Plates

The issuance of license plates is carried out through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, which sets eligibility rules according to Section 502 of the Texas Transportation Code. The county tax assessor-collector’s office conducts the transaction. Most applicants quickly pass the eligibility check; rules concerning vehicles are where denials occur.

  • Residence: New Texas residents have 30 days from the date of establishing residency to register their vehicle, according to the TxDMV New Resident Guide.
  • Vehicle: The application must be submitted by the owner with the right of ownership (or lienholder on a financed vehicle). Vehicles marked “salvage” cannot receive standard registration plates until the vehicle is restored and passes a state inspection; vehicles that are non-repairable are entirely ineligible, according to the TxDMV Salvage/Nonrepairable Vehicle Manual.
  • When applying, you must provide identification, a valid Texas insurance card meeting the established minimums, and an out-of-state vehicle title or manufacturer’s certificate of origin.
  • Plate Categories: Statutorily free or reduced-fee plates require documented proof of eligibility. Plates for Disabled Veterans, Purple Heart Medal, Pearl Harbor Survivors, Prisoner of War Medal, and Medal of Honor are issued through the county tax office. Full eligibility criteria for each are listed on the TxDMV For Our Troops page.

How to Get a License Plate in Texas?

The first registration requires an in-person visit to the county tax assessor-collector’s office; online registration is not available for initial plate issuance. Gather your documents before going: out-of-state vehicle title or manufacturer’s certificate of origin, proof of Texas insurance liability, and a completed Texas Title and/or Registration Application (Form 130-U).

An emissions inspection is required before registration if the vehicle is in one of 17 designated emissions counties (including Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Travis, and Bexar). Take the vehicle to a certified Texas DPS inspection station. As of January 1, 2025, safety inspections are no longer required for non-commercial vehicles statewide.

Pay all fees at the county tax office window. You will receive a registration sticker and plates on the spot, along with a registration receipt. Keep the receipt in the vehicle as proof of registration until the sticker is affixed.

Renewals occur annually. TxDMV sends a renewal notice before expiration; owners who opted for paperless billing receive an email. Renewal is available online, by mail, or in person, starting 90 days before the expiration date and up to 12 months after, according to the TxDMV Vehicle Registration page.

How Much Does a License Plate Cost in Texas?

The base fee is the simple part; additional county fees, electric vehicle surcharge, and processing are where the total exceeds most drivers’ expectations. All figures below are taken from the TxDMV Registration Fee Chart.

  • Passenger cars and light trucks weighing up to 6,000 pounds pay a base fee of $50.75 plus $1 for the TexasSure insurance verification program, totaling $51.75.
  • Motorcycles and Mopeds: base registration fee $30, the lowest rate for the vehicle class on the schedule.
  • Trailers and travel trailers weighing up to 6,000 pounds cost $45. Heavier pickups from 6,001 to 10,000 pounds pay $54; beyond this range, heavy vehicles fall into seven weight classifications, each with its own fee ceiling.
  • Local County Fees range from $0 to $31.50 depending on the registration county, set by individual county commissioners’ courts.
  • Fully electric vehicles (gross weight 10,000 pounds or less) pay an annual electric vehicle surcharge of $200 in addition to all standard fees. New electric vehicles issued a two-year registration are assessed $400 at the time of purchase.
  • Title transfer fee: $28 or $33 depending on whether the county is in an emissions compliance area. A processing and handling fee of $4.75 also applies to each registration transaction.
  • Disabled Veteran Plates have an annual special plate fee of $3 and are fully exempt from the standard registration fee. Other military plates with decorations follow the same exemption schedule.

Can I Get a License Plate Online in Texas?

The online service at renew.txdmv.gov covers renewals only. Initial plate issuance and title transfer must be completed in person at the county tax assessor-collector’s office. The portal accepts credit cards, debit cards, and electronic checks, and sends the updated registration sticker within a few business days after payment clears.

For personal needs, the TxDMV County Tax Offices directory lists each county office statewide. Some counties also allow renewals at substations or participating grocery stores; contact your county’s tax office directly to confirm which substations it serves.

Mail-in renewal is a third option for existing registrations. Send the following to your county’s tax office:

  • Renewal notice (retain the vehicle owner’s section for your records) or your plate number or VIN if you no longer have the notice.
  • A copy of your valid Texas insurance card.
  • Payment by check or money order made payable to the county tax assessor-collector. Do not send original documents or cash.

If Texas can process your case online, renew.txdmv.gov is the fastest route; the county tax office handles what the portal declines.
